TURKISH LEATHER INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION (TLIA) UNITES TEN TANNERIES FOR LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT, ACHIEVING SIGNIFICANT SUSTAINABILITY RESULTS
The Turkish Leather Industry Association has successfully engaged ten of its member tanneries in an innovative project aimed at assessing the environmental impact of their products using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology and defining environmental improvement strategies to be developed collectively.
Istanbul – 11 September 2024 – As part of its commitment to sustainability, the Turkish Leather Industry Association (TLIA) has brought together ten of its member tanneries for a project focused on measuring their environmental impact. This initiative marks a significant step forward in sustainability within the leather sector, demonstrating how Turkish tanneries contribute to sustainability by adopting best practices and assessing their environmental footprint.
This project is part of a medium-term strategy to enhance sustainability practices within the participating tanneries. Through their efforts, several significant outcomes have been achieved:
10 manufacturing plants were characterized using primary data to ensure accurate and actionable insights.
33 leather products were analyzed in detail to understand and mitigate their environmental impact.
924 chemical products used in leather production were reviewed and characterized to identify opportunities for reducing their environmental footprint.
77 tanning recipes were thoroughly examined to optimize processes and improve sustainability.
620 operations within the production cycle were mapped and characterized to identify areas for improvement and innovation.
These results underscore the commitment of the Turkish Leather Industry Association and its member tanneries to environmental sustainability, highlighting the important role of the Turkish leather sector in supporting global luxury and fashion supply chains.
In line with this commitment, the ten participating tanneries will showcase their sustainable leather products at the Lineapelle fair in Milan from 17th to 19th September 2024, reinforcing their dedication to innovation and environmental stewardship on an international stage.
